Early Life and Education

Saint Dominic was born around 1170 in Caleruega, in the Kingdom of Castile (Spain). He came from a respected noble family and showed remarkable intelligence and compassion from an early age. Educated first by the Premonstratensians and later at the University of Palencia, he devoted himself to study, prayer, and charity. During a famine, he sold his precious books to feed the hungry, declaring that learning must serve love.

Mission and Foundation

After becoming a canon in Osma, Dominic accompanied Bishop Diego de Acebo to southern France, where he encountered the Cathar heresy. Convinced that genuine faith required both truth and example, he began preaching a life of simplicity and poverty. In 1206, he founded a house at Prouille for women and as a base for his missionary work.

The Order of Preachers

In 1215, Dominic and his companions formed a community in Toulouse, following the Rule of St Augustine. The new way of life combined study, prayer, and public preaching. Pope Honorius III formally approved the Order of Preachers in 1216. The Dominicans soon spread across Europe, especially to centres of learning such as Paris and Bologna.

Death and Legacy

Dominic died on 6 August 1221 in Bologna, worn out by years of travel and preaching. He urged his brethren to live in humility, charity, and joy. Pope Gregory IX canonised him in 1234. Saint Dominic is venerated as the Patron of Astronomers, and his feast is celebrated on 8 August. His Order continues to uphold his vision of truth united with compassion.
