Portal of the Former Charnel House

Reading Time: 0:30 min

A Romanesque portal stands in front of the church as a reminder of the former round charnel house from the late 12th century. The charnel house once stood near the parish church.

In 1845, the charnel house was demolished as it was regarded as a “traffic obstacle”.

The portal of the charnel house was preserved and initially displayed as an exhibit in the municipal lapidarium. A lapidarium is a place where stone monuments and fragments of archaeological interest are exhibited.

Later, it was installed as the entrance door to the meeting room in the former town hall (Wienerstraße 3),
which also served as a registry office.

Now it is once again located near its original site.
