Round-Arched Single-Light Window,
Deep-Set,
with Mullion and Transoms
(Eastern Wall)

Reading Time: 0:45 min

Exterior View
From the outside, the window appears as a small rectangular opening set deep within the thick wall of the tower. The strong reveals (the sides of the opening) emphasise the building’s defensive mass. Where the outer and inner reveals meet, the opening forms a round-arched head in stone, which helps carry the weight of the wall above.

Interior View
The window sits within a deep, rectangular, splayed recess in the thick wall, so the opening widens toward the room. At the point where the outer and inner recesses meet, there is a round-arched stone opening. Behind it, a later wooden frame with a grid of small panes has been added.

Light Conditions
Facing east, the window admits gentle morning light into the chamber, offering early illumination without excessive heat gain later in the day. The interplay of deep wall thickness, arched stone construction, and inserted wooden glazing illustrates the combination of structural design and subsequent functional modification.
