It dates from the early Baroque period.
History of the Crucifix
A crucifix is a cross with a representation of Jesus’ body on it. In a Catholic Church, it is very important because it reminds people of Jesus’ sacrifice and love for humanity. Catholics believe that Jesus died on the cross to save people from their sins, and the crucifix helps them remember this event.
The crucifix started to appear in Christian art during the 6th century. Before that, early Christian crosses were often simple, without any image of Jesus on them.
The earliest known crucifix was found in Rome, dating from around the 6th century. This was a time when Christian art began to show more details of Jesus’ life and death. Over time, the crucifix became a common symbol in churches and homes.
