Mary as the Throne of Solomon
Romanesque medieval fresco on the west wall (early 13th century)
Today: Only fragments are visible
What did the fresco depict?
Mary is shown as the Throne of Solomon, meaning she is the living throne upon which Christ, Divine Wisdom, sits. This image links the Old Testament prophecy (King Solomon and his Throne of Wisdom) with its New Testament fulfilment in Christ.
How is the motif related to the Christian calendar and church events?
This motif relates closely to Advent and Christmas, when the Church reflects on prophecy and the coming of Christ.
How is the motif related to liturgical and church tradition?
Placed near the western entrance, it prepared worshippers spiritually as they entered the sacred space. It reminded them that Christ’s presence in the chapel continues through the liturgy.
