Textile Printing Moulds

Relief Wooden Moulds

Relief Wooden Moulds (raised design moulds) were used for textile printing.

In textile printing, the design had to be transferred onto the surface of the fabric as a visible pattern. This required a raised (positive) design on the mould:

– The raised parts of the wooden block were coated with dye or pigment.
– The block was then pressed onto the textile surface.
– The raised areas deposited the colour, creating the printed pattern.

Why were recessed moulds not used?

Recessed Wooden Moulds (negative moulds) were not suitable for textile printing because:

– The design was carved into the surface (hollow).
– These moulds were designed to be filled, not inked.
– They produced raised objects, not surface prints.
